Marta Valpiani

Elisa Mazzavillani and her mother, Marta Valpiani, make wines in Romagna, at their cantina atop the Bagnolo hill, between the two towns of Castrocaro Terme and Terra del Sole.

Their eight hectares of vineyards — primarily Albana and Sangiovese — are located 250 to 350 meters above sea level on both sides of the hill, with fossil-laden soils predominately of blue clay to the north and fine yellow sand and gypsum to the south. The nearby Adriatic lends a savory, saline note to the white wines, and the blue clay soils inspire uniquely intense, floral Sangiovese.

An accomplished artist, Elisa created the beautiful bottle labels herself, reflecting local flora and fauna — yet another deeply personal touch to her elegantly crafted wines which energetically express their Romagna terroir.
